take refreshments, while absorbing information concerning the Observatories
and the science being done at the telescopes. Unfortunately, in spite of our
most strenuous efforts there has been no way to achieve this.
At Teide Observatory we even managed to persuade CajaCanarias to fund
an architectural project as a first step towards finding the finances for the
building work. But we were never able to get the state, the Canarian
Community, or the Cabildo to contribute. In the end we were forced to adapt

There was a moment when it seemed that a grand project for a visitors’
centre was about to prosper, with telescopes for visitors to carry out their own
observations. In order not to disturb the scientific work it was thought that
cars and buses could be parked in El Portillo at the entrance to Cañadas del
Teide, with shuttles to ferry people back and forth to the Observatory.
