The most noteworthy benefits of the law include protection of the night
sky for both astronomical and cultural purposes, protection of the environment and biodiversity, and energy saving.
We realized right away that, if this law was to be observed, permanent technical vigilance was necessary, in combination with a continuous programme
of social awareness and education. For this purpose, in 1992 the IAC created
the Technical Office for the Protection of Sky Quality (OTPC), which serves
to orientate citizens on how to conform to the law and oversee its application.
Special talks and courses were given to public illumination technicians of the
Canarian municipalities. Much emphasis has always been placed on outreach
in the form of talks, publications, videos, and social networks. Every attempt
has been made to collaborate with firms that produce and install lighting
