2 Fluorinated Amphiphilic Copolymers
2.1 Synthesis of Fluorinated Amphiphilic Copolymers
A variety of amphiphilic copolymers containing a water-soluble monomer and a
water-insoluble (hydrophobic) partially fluorinated monomer were synthesized by
conventional free radical polymerization. The hydrophilic monomers used included
N,N-dimethylacrylamide
(DMA),
N-isopropylacrylamide
(NIPA),
and
2-hydroxyethyl acrylate HEA, Fig. 1. The partially fluorinated monomers used
were 2-(N-ethylperfluorooctane sulfonamido)ethyl acrylate (FOSA) and 2-(Nethylperfluorooctanesulfonamido)ethyl methacrylate (FOSM) (Fig. 1).
The details of the copolymer syntheses and hydrogel preparation and characterization can be found elsewhere [8–25]. Prior to copolymerization DMA was vacuum
distilled over calcium hydride to remove any inhibitor. NIPA was recrystallized
twice from a mixture of hexane and benzene (65/35 v/v), HEA was passed through a
hydroquinone removal column to remove the inhibitor(s), and FOSA and FOSM
