Chemicals in the Industry today…
Chemical Substances
(pure form)
Examples: acetone, ethanol, …
Chemical mixtures or preparations
(more than one single substance)
Examples: coatings, adhesives,
polymers, …
Fig. 1.1 Chemical substances and mixtures are subjected to restrictive regulations, in particular
on the work field. It is essential to consider differences between single (pure) substances and
preparations or mixtures. This table has been realized by Carmelo Parisi, currently a student at the
Liceo Scientifico Stanislao Cannizzaro, Palermo, Italy
(5) Disposal and treatment of chemical waste
(6) Emission of chemicals resulting from professional activities
(7) Maintenance, repair, and cleaning of equipment and containers used for
chemicals.
1.3 Several Definitions
1.3.1 Definition 1
Chemical risk refers to all hazardous situations involving chemicals, in all possible
situations (no exclusions!). It groups together the risks associated with storing products, transporting them in and out of the food and non-food company, handling them,
and also eliminating them (United States Department of Labor 2013).
Therefore, the chemical risk is the danger that a product represents by its chemical
properties, by its conditions of use or by its limit value of occupational exposure.
