Review
I thank the authors for having chosen me and have given me an opportunity to review
the book titled “Theory of Elasticity”. It is needless to re-emphasize the significance
and importance of the subject which is mathematical and scary. To use mathematics
effectively in applications, you need, not just knowledge, but skill. You can obtain a
certain superficial knowledge of mathematical subjects by listening to lectures, but
you can obtain skills only by solving the problems. The authors have bridged the gap
between knowledge and skill.
The authors have succeeded in writing a book on “Theory of Elasticity” in a lucid
and logical style for the senior undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Civil
& Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering disciplines. In this, the authors have
developed the subject matter in a comprehensive manner in stages for the students
in a simple and logical way with numerous illustrative examples. The exercise at the
end of each chapter helps the student to get an excellent insight into the mathematical
subject merits mention.
The authors have presented St Venant’s principle which draws the attentions of
readers, i.e. “when a body is subjected to various types of loading, the distribution
of stress throughout the body is altered only near the region of load application.
However the stress distribution is not altered at a distance x=2b irrespective of loading
conditions” with illustrative example merits special mention.
The authors have presented torsion of prismatic bar theory and experimental
technique of obtaining approximate analytical solutions for bars of narrow sections
and members of open thin-walled sections by Prandtl’s membrane analogy with
illustrative examples and exercise which is complete in all respects.
The two-dimensional problems in polar coordinate systems are illustrated with lot
of numerical examples for curved beams. However, the stress concentration factors
for sections with circular holes with application to simple tension, compression and
bolts would be highly appreciated and had there been an inclusion of numerical
examples. The topic of geomechanics is an interesting addition. The application
problems on geomechanics with numerical examples are included and then, the
authors have accomplished their goal.
