8 Measurement of Aerodynamic Forces and Moments
This kind of survey is very instructive for aircraft or ground vehicles designers
because it helps to identify and characterise the drag sources and to quantify them. It
is a guide to improve the design of a wing by addressing the factors that contributes
to viscous drag, induced drag and wave drag due to shock waves in transonic flow.
Such an approach, called drag decomposition, is also applied to the processing of
numerical simulations. Figure 8.18 shows a wake exploration setup in the S1MA
transonic wind tunnel at ONERA, Modane-Avrieux.
