16.5 Independent Information on the Fisheries: Acoustic
Surveys
The IEO conducts an annual acoustic assessment survey to establish the biomass of
small pelagic species in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. Until 2009, the ECOMED
survey was conducted every year between November and December, which is when
anchovies undergo recruitment and sardines spawn. Nevertheless, in 2009, the
