Limit current – Consider an electrode that hosts the following reduction reaction:
Ox + ne $ Red
If we impose on the electrode a sufficiently negative potential with respect
to the equilibrium potential to cancel the concentration of the Ox species at
the electrode-electrolyte interface, the current density approaches an asymptote called the limit current. Its value depends on the diffusion coefficient
toward the interface of the Ox species. The existence of a limiting current is
manifested by a horizontal line in the current-potential curve.
Lattice parameters – In crystallography, the lattice parameters define the dimensions
of the unit cell of the crystal. A triclinic system, which is the least symmetric,
requires six parameters (a, b, c, α, β, γ) to define the lattice, whereas only a
single parameter is needed to define a cubic system. In a cubic system, the
lattice parameter denotes the size of the cube associated with the unit cell.
Mass energy density – The mass energy density of a battery corresponds to the
quantity of energy that the battery can deliver per unit mass. It is expressed
in Wh kg
–1
if the energy is furnished strictly in the form of electricity.
Migration energy – The energy required for an electric field to displace a species
from one site to a neighboring site in a crystal.
Mixed conductivity – In solid-state electrochemistry, for given temperature and
environmental conditions, a material has mixed conductivity when none of
the contributions of ions and of other electronic species (electrons, holes)
may be neglected.
Nyquist representation – A way of representing the magnitude of a complex electrical quantity (impedance, admittance, …) as a function of frequency. This
representation shows the opposite of the imaginary part as a function of the
real part of the given quantity. For impedance, the resulting diagram contains
semi-circles, loops, and lines that reveal the behavior of the elements within
the electrical circuit under study. The Nyquist representation is commonly
used by electrical engineers and electrochemists.
Perovskite – Originally, a perovskite denoted a mineral formed with calcium
titanate. Today, it denotes a family of solids with a structure of the same
name with the general formula ABO 3 and commonly found in nature. It can
have various physical properties (giant magnetoresistance, superconductivity,
mixed conductivity, …).
Polarization resistance of an electrode – The polarization resistance of an electrode
is the sum of the resistance of each elementary process contributing to the
overall reaction at the polarized electrode (adsorption, desorption, charge
transfer, diffusion).
