caisson oscillating water column (OWC) and a wind power station. The wave
energy device is an oscillating water column type with one air chamber and two
vertical pipes. Two of the nine caissons were damaged during launching, together
with the harsh sea conditions, which caused the device to sink and not to float.
Finally, the turbine and other equipment on the device can only be dismantled. The
main body of the device was damaged and sunk on August 27, 1995. After the
sinking of OSPREY I, the UK began to build OSPREY 2000 with an installed
capacity of 2 MW. Low-cost steel and concrete standard parts structure is adopted
to achieve rapid installation and disassembly and minimize the impact on the
environment. The structural life is 60 years and the renewal life of mechanical and
electrical equipment is 20 years. Because of the lessons learned from OSPREY I,
the new OSPREY 2000 uses a combination structure and better installation procedures, so that the offshore installation time can be minimized.
Portugal’s 500 kW coastal wave energy device is constructed on Pico Island in
the Azores Islands of Portugal with oscillating water column structure. As shown in
Fig. 14.31, the size of the chamber is 12 m  12 m, which is constructed on site
using Wells turbine with diameter of 2.3 M. The annual average power is 124 kW,
the maximum instantaneous power is 525 kW, and the rotational speed is
750 $ 1500 r=min.
Figure 14.32 shows the land-installed-marine-powered energy transformer
(LIMPET500) of the 500 kW shore oscillating water column wave energy device in
the United Kingdom. It was built by the European Community-funded British
Wave Energy Company in cooperation with Queen’s University. Based on a 75 kW
coastal wave energy device developed in the 1990s, it was built in Islay, Scotland,
in 2000. The station is located on the steep bank wall of the existing shoreline. The
front wall structure of reinforced concrete extends below the water surface. The
bottom of the air chamber is connected with the seawater, and the top is an air
column. Average wave energy density is 15 $ 25 kW=m, and equipped with two
Wells turbogenerators with 250 kW power. At present, it has entered the stage of
commercial operation, and the electricity can be used by 400 households.
