Chapter 14
Pneumatic Principle and Device
of Oscillating Water Column Wave
Power Generation
This chapter mainly introduces the oscillating water column wave power generation
device, including the aerodynamic principle, basic structure, mathematical model of
oscillating water column wave power generation, as well as the design theory and
method of the Japanese Mighty Whale power generation ship. The aerodynamic
principle and key technology of oscillating water column type ocean wave power
generation device are introduced through some foreign engineering examples.
14.1 Overview
Oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy generating device, also known as air
turbine wave energy generating device, is a widely used wave energy generating
device. In 1910, the French first built an air-powered private power station with a
capacity of 1 kW on the coast, becoming the first successful wave power plant in
the world. Since 1980s, many kinds of ocean wave power stations have been built
in Norway, Japan, Britain, China and other countries, most of which are oscillating
water column ocean wave power stations. The main reason is that it has good wave
energy conversion performance and anticorrosion performance, less dependence on
terrain, design methods and construction technology are becoming mature. In 1978,
China developed a kilowatt-level air turbine wave power buoy, which was tested
and generated in the Luhuashan sea area of Zhoushan Islands, Zhejiang Province.
Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin, and Nanjing have launched wave power generation research.
According to different service locations, oscillating water column wave energy
generating devices can be divided into offshore devices, nearshore devices, and
shoreline devices. Most offshore devices are located in areas with abundant wave
energy resources whose water depth is more than 40 m. The nearshore devices are
generally placed in the depth of 15*20 m, within 1 km from the coast. Shoreline
wave power generation devices are generally fixed on the shore, easy to install and
