steady-state CD measurement of Δ- and Λ-Ru complex [11]. Here, we describe our
recent progress for TRCD experiments with elliptically polarized measurements.
15.3 Jones Vector Description of CD Measurement
with Elliptically Polarized Light
The CD measurement apparatus discussed here is schematically shown in Fig. 15.1.
In Fig. 15.1, light from Xe lamp is directed to the first glan-laser prism to yield
linearly polarized light. To produce elliptically polarized light, linearly polarized
light is directed into the home-built retarder, in which a θ-stage is mounted to control
the azimuth (θ). Note that the azimuth is defined as the angle between the fast axis of
the home-built retarder and polarized plane of the introduced linearly polarized light
proceeding in the counterclockwise direction. Usually, the polarized plane is set
vertically; thus, the long axis of the elliptical polarization is also in the vertical
direction. We can produce left- and right-handed elliptically polarized light by
controlling the azimuth θ, in particular +θ for left-handed polarized light and Àθ
