10.2.5 CPL of Molecular Origin and Other Effects
In all chiroptical spectroscopies, care should be taken to understand exactly what one
is observing and, to this instance, the analysis of all optical phenomena involved is
particularly important when considering CPL. Since the early days of the technique,
Fig. 10.11 CPL (top) and fluorescence spectra (middle) of three enantiomeric pairs of Ir(III)
complexes. On the left, spectra of (FIrpic): fac-trans-N–N,bis-[2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridinatoC2,N](picolinato)iridium(III); on the right, spectra of Δ,Λ-(R,S)-[(ppy)2Ir-(Me-Campy)]Cl, where
ppy ¼ 2-phenylpyridine and Me-Campy ¼ -methyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinolin-8-amine. (Bottom):
DFT calculated structures of Λ-FIrpic and Δ-FIrpic and of Δ-(S)-[(ppy)2Ir-(Me-Campy)]Cl and
Λ-(S)-[(ppy)2Ir-(Me-Campy)]Cl (see Refs. [57, 58])
