Chapter 4
Study on a Digital Inspection Method
for Aircraft Tubing Assembly
GuangJun Li, JingChao Yang, Dan Huang, and Wei Han
Abstract Based on the difference analysis between measuring datum and assembling datum of aircraft tubing, reference points of these two kinds of datum were
unified. The key technical issues were investigated from aspects of assembling datum
analysis, centerline data extraction, measuring datum fitting and assembly accuracy
analysis. The digital inspection software of tubing for assembly was developed based
on CATIA V5. The shape deviation of tubing was divided into the axial deviation, the
radial deviation and the angle deviation to realize the accurate description of the shape
deviation data. And then, these three deviations were matched with the butt clearance, misalignment and angle deviation in actual assembly of tubular components.
Finally, error analysis report of tubing assembly and accurate description of tubing
shape deviation data can be generated, so as to solve the problem of misjudgment in
traditional inspection methods and provide supports for product quality improvement
and data statistical analysis.

4.1 Introduction
Tubing is one of the most significant parts applied in the pipeline systems of aircraft.
It is spread all over a whole aircraft with the features of large amount and compact
structure, known as the “bleeding” components of aircraft to guarantee conveying
fluids from one location to another [1, 2]. On one hand, they bring the gas/oil to
the engine, the landing gear and the cockpit, etc., satisfying the requirements of
