the strong steel outer tube. Because the thin tube was likely to deform at the
high pressure, an auxiliary pressure tube introduced gas to the annulus
thereby equalising the pressure inside and outside the thin tube. The seals in
this apparatus were made gas tight using ‘Vulcan fibre’,
21 and ‘Fig. 2’ in
Fig. 8.1 shows how this was achieved whilst simultaneously providing insulation for the heating wire(s). Analysis of the gas was via a Raleigh interferometer supplied by Zeiss and for which Haber had gained a patent earlier in
