Fig. 6 Effect of fiber properties and characteristics on shedding [Authors own representation]
4.2 Effect of Yarn Parameters
Yarns are made by assembling the fibers or filaments with or without twist [46]. The
properties of yarn including hairiness, breaking strength, and evenness can be varied
with the fibers used and the spinning methods adapted. These differed properties can
have a potential impact on microfiber shedding [23].
4.2.1 Type of Yarn
The characteristic of yarn hugely depends on spinning methods. Various spinning
methods including rotor spinning, ring spinning, air-jet spinning, compact spinning,
self-twist spinning, and hollow spindle spinning will produce different yarn structure
[48]. Cai et al. studied the microfiber shedding from different yarn types such as airjet yarn, ring-spun yarn, and rotor yarn. They have reported a higher level of shedding
in the case of rotor yarns when compared with air-jet and ring-spun yarns. In the
ring spinning and air-jet spinning processes, the short fibers are removed as the fibers
are drawn and parallelized [47]. While comparing conventional ring-spun yarn with
yarns produced by the compact ring spinning method, the hairiness will be higher
in the case of the conventional method and this can cause increased fiber shedding
[41].
