parasite, Vetufebrus ovatus, were attached to the midgut wall of the host fly
(Fig. 2.47). Mature sporozoites were present in salivary ducts and secretions of the
fossil fly, indicating that Neotropical bat flies were vectoring malaria to bats in the
mid-Cenozoic (Poinar 2012a, b).
