One characteristic common to all countries in today’s global economy is the
necessity to construct, repair, refurbish, and modernize their infrastructures. Economic infrastructure is made up of public utilities such as power plants, telecommunications, piped water supply, sanitation and sewage facilities, arrangements for
solid waste collection and disposal, and gas pipe lines. Public works, such as roads,
dams, canals, urban and interurban rail systems, ports, waterways, and airports round
out the investments known as infrastructure.
During the last quarter of the century, Mauritius has pursued an aggressive
infrastructure construction program to provide
• Sufficient, reliable power to enable the growth of an industrial base and provide a
higher standard of living for their citizens
• Clean water and adequate sewage disposal systems for industrial growth and
protection of the population, but not at the expense of the environment
• Roads, airports, port facilities, and public transportation systems to get both
worker and product to market faster and more efficiently
• A link-up of the country via a greatly expanded telecommunications system for
both mercantile and residential usage
Once the country has invested in infrastructure, it is faced with the need to
upgrade and revitalize its infrastructure. In order to compete in the aggressive global
marketplace in which it operates, it must
• Rehabilitate existing infrastructure and expand the construction of new roads,
bridges, tunnels, port facilities, and rapid transportation facilities to speed
workers to and from their jobs and reduce the time and cost of transporting goods
• Create a healthy environment, provide clean air and water, and dispose of waste
materials efficiently and effectively
