Chapter 8
Analysis of Environmental Impacts
of Infrastructure
Infrastructure design is the process of preventing problems
before they happen.
Mostafa Khalil
Future engineers are expected to appreciate, more than
before, the human dimensions of technology. They are
expected to have a grasp of the global issues. There is a need
to understand the nuances of working in a culturally diverse
space.
P. Ghosh
Why are we here?
David Elms
Now, where should a human being walk? In the outdoors - by
a river, inside a park, around a forest. However, displaying,
their usual genius for town planning, the rich of Delhi had
built this part of Gurgaon with no parks, lawns, or
playgrounds - it was just buildings, shopping malls, hotels,
and more buildings. There was a pavement outside, but that
was for the poor to live on. So if you wanted to do some
“walking”, it had to be done around the concrete compound
of your own building.
Aravind Adiga (The White Tiger)
We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment.
Margaret Mead
Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an
environment where excellence is expected.
Steve Jobs
Our population and our use of the finite resources of planet
Earth are growing exponentially, along with our technical
ability to change the environment for good or ill.
Stephen Hawking
