Alessandro Virtuani is a senior researcher at the PV-Lab of
EPFL (Neuchâtel) where he is responsible for the PV module and reliability group. He is co-founder of a start-up Officina del Sole (www.o-sole.eu), which offers testing/consulting
services in the field of PV. His research interest covers performance/reliability testing, development of innovative module concepts, energy yield modelling of PV devices/systems,
Building-Integrated PV (BIPV), and technology transfer to
industry. In 2016, he has served as technical advisor to IFC
(World Bank group) with a project aimed at promoting a sustainable diffusion of rooftop solar systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Alessandro has worked at ESTI (Joint Research Centre of the
European Commission), the European centre of reference for
PV testing. He is a physicist with a PhD in Materials Sciences (University of Milano-Bicocca, 2004), obtained carrying
out research activity on the optimization of CIGS thin film solar
cells/modules at ZSW (Stuttgart). In 2014, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from SDA-Bocconi.
Alessandro is the inventor of the DragonBack measurement
method for the testing of high-efficient silicon devices, and is a
member of the ETIP-PV (European Innovation and Technology
PV Platform).
