High-intensity ultrasonic waves can be focused to a small region to produce
extreme cavitation. The concentration of sound energy at the focus can be sufficient
to vaporize and ionize molecules and atoms in the fluid, with the material in the focal
region reaching temperatures in the millions of degrees Celsius, emitting visible,
ultraviolet, and even X-rays. The effect is called ‘sonoluminescence’.
