18.5 The Holo-reality Code
Even today, computers can be used to create holographic scenes in space of objects
which may never have existed physically, and even make them sequentially act
over time. Filmmakers could resurrect the complete 3-D images of past actors via
computer animation, and have them act in 3-D with new scripts, advancing on
current digital animation techniques.
However, one should note that animated digital holograms are encumbered by the
large amount of information that needs to be stored. Compare this information with
that required for ordinary video. The hologram has the equivalent of many views,
as if a large number of cameras were being used. In contrast, a 3-D viewer requires
only two times the information storage of an ordinary video. Of course, since one
expects a large amount of redundancy and correlation from one to the next view, the
opportunity for significant data compression is available.
18.6 The X-pression Code
Someday, a computer code will take as input a human DNA sequence, and from it
generate as output the consequent adult 3-D tomographic image, including the facial
features, internal organs, and list any serious genetic diseases. Of course, there may
be many accidents, mutations, deprivations, and other mayhem along the way during
any real development from embryo to adult. But the outcome of DNA expression is
strongly determined. Look how similar we are one to another, and how much our
biochemistry is so close to other animals and even plants. Reliability mechanisms
have become part of the DNA code.
The Xpression code will have all the molecular dynamics needed to know how
natural mutations, viral mutagenesis, or intentional changes in the DNA sequence
will affect the adult living system. The dynamical coupling of genes and feedback
systems for controlling protein production must necessarily be a part of the code, as
well as the rules for protein folding and interactions.
Xpression will not start with the quantum theory of atoms, as this approach
would make the computer memory requirements far larger than necessary. Rather,
emergent principles in nano- and mesoscopic biophysics and biochemistry derived
from the dynamics of cells would be a more feasible beginning point.
18.7 The Simu-later Code
Someday, far into the future, we will have a code which can closely simulate the
evolution of life, including its genesis from organic compounds, the thresholds
produced by catalysts, by the utilization of high-energy molecules and external
