Chapter 23
Sized Crystals
Abstract An incorporation of the BOLS-LBA notion and the phonon spectrometrics have reconciled the effects of crystal size, pressure, and temperature on the
phonon frequency and elasticity relaxation of the group IV, ZnO, TiO 2 , CeO 2 , CdS,
CdSe, and Bi 2 Se 3 nanostructures and the group IV, III–V, II–IV bulk crystals with
derivative of ever-unexpected information. Integral of the DPS peaks turns out the
skin-shell thickness of nanostructured crystals and quasi-liquid water. Reproduction of the size trend of phonon frequency shift derives the bond nature index, bond
length and energy, effective coordination number, intergrain coupling strength, dimer
vibration frequency. Theoretical match to Debye thermal decay and compression of
measurements has derived the cohesive energy, Debye temperature, binding energy
density, and elasticity.
Highlights
• DPS resolves the skin thickness of the core-shell structured nanocrystals and liquid
droplets.
• Intergrain coupling emits THz waves with frequency proportional to the inverse
of grain size.
• Dimer vibration stems the TO and collective oscillation originates LO phonon
frequency shift.
• Phonon frequency and elasticity hold the same trends of compression and Debye
thermal decay.
23.1 Skin Thickness of the Core-Shelled Structures
Using the DPS, one can confirm the core-shell structure and determine the skin
thickness of solid nanocrystals and water nanodroplets. The DPS was conducted to
separate the skin bond vibration frequencies from their bulk mixture by differencing the bulk reference spectrum from those collected from the sized samples of the
