10 Superior Types of Bamboo as a Construction Material with MCDM …
79
The dimensions shown in the table are based on the green state of bamboo (PlantUse, Flora of China, Guadua Bamboo, PFAF, Useful Tropical Plants), as after careful
treatment and drying of the bamboo, the dimension’s change. The change in size
depends on for the type of treatment that is chosen for the bamboo. For frequent
bamboo, sizes change by 10–15% after treatment (Tables 10.2 and 10.3).
The bamboo that people use in construction is not always selected properly or is
prone to improper handling, and many people do not use any treatment, so buildings
constructed using this material can collapse in just a couple of years. The selection of
the type of bamboo depends on the kind of building the architects plan to construct.
Table 10.4 showing the ranking of the material used it is graded from the most to the
least useful.
10.4 Results and Discussion
10.4.1 Results
The paper shows the work of combination of the MCDM methods with fuzzy logic
to determine which species of bamboo is better to use in construction industry. In
the Table 10.2 the H (m), D (cm), Wall T. (cm), Internode l. av. (cm), Const. (1–
10) this is one of the main criteria in the selection of the right type of bamboo for
construction and design. However, if changes are made to the criterion part of the
table, the result also changes. The results show that the first three in the ranking are the
most suitable type of bamboo: # 1–Bambusa blumeana, # 2–Phyllostachys edulis and
# 3–Dendrocalamus giganteus. The main advantage is its user-friendliness arising
from linguistic evaluations and it also takes into account the uncertainty or fuzziness
inherent in a particular topic. When it comes to bamboo, you cannot accurately say its
dimensions. As many buildings can be built in different ways and a certain bamboo
will be selected for each element of the building. Bamboo is difficult to make the
same for large batches, so builders and engineers should select bamboo separately for
each element of the building. For architects who work on building bamboo buildings
the provided table will be useful since it indicates the size of the bamboo and where
it can be used.
With the right approach and processing of this material a house can be build using
bamboo from the foundation to the roof. Bamboo releases 35% more oxygen than
coniferous trees while also absorbing carbon dioxide. Since it is a 100% natural
product. Energy is not expended on production, meaning that bamboo is ready for
use. Bamboo can play an important role in the future of mankind as the human need
for wood can be replaced with bamboo thus preventing frequent deforestation due
to the growing demand for raw materials for housing and construction.
