13.1 Introduction
Education is the most important force that has the power to change the world. The
most effective way of achieving this is to educate individuals who can think, perform
research, question and solve problems. Educational systems that produce conditioned, behavioral, imitative, and memorizing minds are insufficient when faced
with contemporary developments (Oakes et al. 2015). Consequently, this situation
necessitates that current educational approaches and practices are updated. Today, in
most of the developed countries, individuals want to be provided with the twenty-first
century knowledge and skills, which include the ability to rapidly access and implement new information, oral and written communication, critical thinking, problem
solving, teamwork and collaboration, the ability to use technology, leadership and
project management (Güne¸ s 2014). Differences in the way new generation learners
acquire their knowledge should be taken seriously (Breuer et al. 2017). For this
reason, planned studies are conducted at every level from primary school to university
and contemporary education approaches and methods are utilized (Güne¸ s 2014).
In this context, it is evident that not only one method or technique should be
used when teaching lessons at every educational stage, but different methods and
techniques should be chosen appropriately according to the specific purposes. The
educator should understand the students and act accordingly so that everyone can
learn if the time and the opportunity are given to them (Petru¸ ta 2013).
One of the easiest ways to achieve the goals that are stated in the curriculum is to
use the right teaching methods and techniques, which should be chosen appropriately.
Using a wide range of methods and techniques in class ensures that the students
continue to be engaged and facilitates more effective learning. Educators’ selection
of methods is proportional to their ability to recognize and utilize very different
methods (Romiszowski 2016).
No method can offer the perfect solution to a given course. Educators should
choose the most appropriate methods for the class with their own personal efforts
and they should be able to make changes based on their interpretation of signals from
the classroom. The important thing is that the teacher should choose the method that
will ensure that the subject is taught in the most effective manner (Nilson 2016). The
effects of the methods and techniques vary according to the characteristics of the
students, the subject matter, and goals that are desired to be achieved. For this reason,
if the teachers have sufficient knowledge of the advantages and the disadvantages of
different teaching methods and techniques, this will enable them to make the right
decision when choosing the most appropriate method (Slunt and Giancarlo 2004).
