Lestari (WSL) and PT. Mayangkara Tanaman Industri (MTI) in West Kalimantan,
Indonesia, are Industrial Forest Plantation (Hutan Tanaman Industri, HTI) companies that have developed a new water management system in tropical peatlands, and
introduce unifying environmental and economic sustainability as responsible
peatland management.
3.2 Key Concept on the Large-Scale Eco-Management
of Tropical Peatlands
The key to large-scale Eco-management is to ensure that the original functions of the
peat ecosystem have been maintained. For this purpose, it is important to carry out
proper water management at the existing development sites, i.e., (1) water stock/
reservoir, (2) irrigation, and (3) water cycling based on these functions, considering
precipitation and evapotranspiration (Fig. 3.1). In peatland management, water

functions, irrigation, precipitation, and evapotranspiration are closely related and circulated. Basically, the water flow from the top of the slope to the bottom is blocked by several dams; then, water
is irrigated to the branch canal
