29.4.2 Ecosystems in U Minh National Parks
Previously, the primary vegetation cover in UMT swamp forest was regenerated
Melaleuca forest and semi-natural mixed forest, which accounted for 3915 ha
(MARD 1997). Interwoven between semi-natural Melaleuca forests was seasonally
inundated grasslands and open swamps (Safford et al. 1998; Buckton et al. 1999;
Triet 2000; Birdlife 2004). However, the status of ecosystems was greatly affected
by the construction of canals in peat-swamps, illegal logging, and forest fires
(Sanders 2002; BirdLife 2004; Quoi 2010b; Anon 1998). Ecosystems have changed
positively after the improvement of hydrological management inside the national
park since 2009 (Fig. 29.8; Table 29.3) (Ha and Quoi 2014).
