The novelty gathered from this plot is that the economic value of peat conversion
to canal based agriculture does not outweigh the benefits of peatland restoration.
Although the participation of Pak Nur in restoring peatland is possible as Pak Nur
has a stable income from his salary as a teacher, we believe that revegetation or
rewetting is also eligible in peatland areas where the communities’ income depends
on the yield of their peatlands. It can be realized by establishing alternative peatfriendly economic sources and taking payment for ecosystem services (PES) such as
Fig. 28.2 Initial condition of the revegetation plot smoldering due to peat fire in 2004 (left) and the
start of establishment of the plot in 2007 (right)
Fig. 28.3 Existing condition of Pak Nur’s revegetation area in Tanjung Leban Village, Riau,
captured in dry season July 2019, water table in land was lower than canal (which was approximately 63 cm in land and approximately À40 cm respectively)
