Canal backfilling method has been practiced by BRG in Central Kalimantan and
South Sumatra to speed up the recovery of peatland hydrology in protected or
conservation areas. In addition, Euroconsult Mott MacDonald (EMM) has
implemented canal backfilling through peat compaction in Taman Hutan Raya
Orang Kayo Hitam, Jambi Province (Suryadiputra et al. 2018).
20.4 Case Study of Canal Blocking in Central Kalimantan:
Impacts on Ground and Surface Water Level
Dynamics
20.4.1 Introduction
This study aims at investigating the impacts of canal blocking on ground and surface
water level dynamics and their stabilization. This study was conducted in Garung
village, Pulang Pisau District of Central Kalimantan Province. Two canals, namely
Jajangkit and Ulin were selected to monitor both the ground and surface water levels
dynamics. Jajangkit canal represents blocked canal, whereas Ulin canal represents
unblocked canal and serves as a control variable. About 98 monitor wells were
