9.4.3 Vegetable Case
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. Capitata) is a vegetable with high economic values,
also with serious problems such as (1) high rate of fertilizer application, especially
inorganic N and P chemical fertilizers, causing environment pollution (Yazdani et al.
2009) and (2) eradicating pests and diseases. As LOB-BS contains microbes for
N-fixing, P-solubilizing, growth hormone producers, and biocontrol agents, it is
expected that LOB-BS plays a major role in providing nutrients for cabbage plants.
LOB-BS application is very effective in cabbage growth in greenhouses (increasing
by 30%) and fields (significant increase) (Fig. 9.5) (Antonius and Agustyani (2011b)
and unpublished data).
9.5 PGPR for AeroHydro Culture Practice
AeroHydro Culture intends to follow a native ecosystem in tropical peatland. As the
groundwater level (GWL) is high in native tropical peatland, it is normal that oxygen
and nutrients are also limited because of leaching. However, peatland forest plants
are grown well even in native tropical peatland. It is obvious that plants acquire
oxygen and nutrients from the land surface of peatland, not from inside peatland.
Therefore, in this paper, a new cultivation method called AeroHydro Culture is
proposed because the nutrients and oxygen are supplied from the land surface.
