AeroHydro culture will contribute to the development of large-scale ecological
management of tropical peatland ecosystems even at high GWLs and is expected
to be used by farmers as a fireless cultivation system. In AeroHydro culture, the
formation of aerial roots and mound roots is promoted by applying mixed material
from the peatland surface with an innovative technology called AeroHydro Culture
media (Fig. 7.3). The idea for AeroHydro culture came from three essential studies
on (1) rhizosphere management, (2) PGPR, and (3) matrices for microorganism
activity and from two case studies on (4) the formation of aerial roots and mound
roots in a native peatland with high GWL, and (5) the practice of nutrient application
from the land surface in oil palm and pulpwood plantations with high groundwater
levels in peatlands in West Kalimantan, Indonesia (Fig. 7.3). These studies and cases
