4.9.1 Amines
13 C Chemical Shifts of Amines and Ammonium Salts (δ in ppm)
The protonation of amines causes a shielding of the carbon atoms in the vicinity of
the nitrogen. This shielding amounts to -2 ppm for an α carbon atom, -3 to -4 for a
β carbon, and -0.5 to -1.0 ppm for a γ carbon. The most frequent exceptions occur
in branched systems: Tertiary and quaternary carbon atoms in the α-position are
generally deshielded by protonation of the nitrogen (Δδ = +0.5 to +9 ppm). In the
following, shifts induced by protonation (δ amine hydrochloride - δ amine , measured in
D 2 O) are given in parentheses.
