Description :
Statistics is a requirement in Nursing. Midwifery and other health train- ing Schools and Colleges. Yet most students in such institutions have very limited interest in the subject. Perhaps, they consider it as a branch of Mathematics, a subject they detested so much in Senior High School. The students, and even those in practice, need to have, at the very least, a good understanding of what statistics is all about and how statistics, as a tool for research, can be applied and interpreted. I have come to realise that the book on Basic Statistics I wrote in 2005 is too detailed for those who are not statistics students or who do not require deep knowledge in statistics. It has never been accessible to non-statistics students. Therefore, I have written this book specifically to follow the syllabus for the Nursing and Midwifery Schools and Colleges, and also to satisfy other health training institutions. The reader will soon realise that the text has been written in such a systematic way that he or she does not need an introduction to any topic to be able to understand it. Within the chapters, important concepts are set out as definitions (en- closed in double boxes). The basic mathematical concept that is needed in the understanding of the materials in this text is the summation sign and this has been explained in the text. So far as mathematical prereq uisites are concerned, this text is self-contained and self-explanatory. Now a brief tour of the book. Chapters 1 and 2 form the introduc tion of the book, which defines statistics (Chapter 1) and terms, concepts and phrases in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 and 4 are on tabulation and Chap- ters 5 and 6 on charts and graphs. Chapter 7 is on measures of central tendency, popularly known as averages and Chapter 8 discusses quartiles which is one of the measures of non-central location. Chapter 9 is on measures of dispersion. The Normal and the Student's t distributions are discussed in Chapters 10 and 11, respectively. These topics require some other background which go beyond this book and so only an introduc- tion to them has been given here. The last chapter discusses Pearson's correlation coefficient and the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.
