21.1 Introduction
Water resources are an integral element of the natural environment in which human
plays an important role. Modern environmental management, including water, based
on the principle of protection through sustainable use favors the preservation of
natural resources for future generations. Effective protection of water resources first
requires knowing their size and distribution. Having knowledge about the size of
water resources and their variability in time, it is possible to properly manage water
resources.
Based on many years of research, a summary of the most important findings and
conclusions from the research on the size and variability of surface and underground
water resources has been presented. Poland belongs to the countries with small
water resources. Proper management of water resources indicates the extent of water
resources used for economic purposes, which should be in accordance with the
principle of sustainable development. A set of recommendations extracted from all
articles was also presented to help scientists and decision-makers in the pursuit of
sustainable use of water resources in Poland.
The book brings state-of-the-art knowledge that can be effectively used for solving
a variety of problems in integrated water resources management as well as the latest
developments in the research area. The main goal of the book is put on water resources
water management and water structures. The volume presents a summary of the
findings, updates, conclusions and recommendations of the studies on water resources
management.
21.2 Update
Research carried out by various authors confirms that water resources in Poland are
diverse both in time and in space. Compared to other European countries, Poland has
relatively small resources of renewable surface waters. In the following the national
studies regarding the water resources in Poland concerned with extreme hydrological
phenomena – droughts and floods and the use of water resources in the national
economy are presented. The brief results of the studies are introduced.
The assessment and management of surface water and groundwater resources
have a long tradition in Poland.
Current national surveys of Polish water resources concern the size and variability of water resources and the possibilities of their economic use. According to
Kundzewicz [1], the following climate changes, which are observed through warming
at various time scales, have important environmental consequences. It is expected
that future climate changes will have a significant impact on the hydrological regime
of rivers, water resources and their quality in various regions of Poland. In recent
years, research into the variability of water resources as a result of global changes
