Susan Brutschy is president of Applied Survey Research
(ASR), which she co-founded in 1981 with Dane
Archer, PhD, sociology professor at the University of
California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Since then, she has led
hundreds of evaluations, assessments, and strategic planning processes to uncover and leverage data about
community- wide quality of life in the United States and
internationally. ASR has earned awards from the
Brookings Institution and the Association for Applied and
Clinical Sociology. Ms. Brutschy graduated from UCSC
with highest honors in sociology. She also received
awards for her research in designing and implementing
quantitative assessments of community opinions for
UCSC’s Social Research Unit.
Jennifer Anderson-Ochoa is project manager at
Applied Survey Research (ASR) and has worked on
assessments in community health, adult and youth homelessness, and child health. Her recent projects include the
Dignity Health Dominican Hospital Community Health
Needs Assessment, the San Luis Obispo Community
Assessment Project, and the Stanislaus Youth and Family
Well-Being Spotlight. Previously, she directed two family
resource centers in Santa Cruz County. Ms. AndersonOchoa worked for 23 years in HIV/AIDS prevention in
the United States and in sub-Saharan Africa. She received
her Masters’ Degree in international administration, with
a concentration in cross-cultural communication and
training, from the School for International Training in
Brattleboro, VT. She received her BA in sociology from
George Washington University.
James Connery is project manager at Applied Survey
Research (ASR). Since 2010, he has contributed to
Community Assessment Projects throughout California
and Alaska by collecting data and collaborating with
members of communities to develop data that otherwise
would not be available. In addition, he has worked on
needs and assets reports of children ages birth through
five years in nine regions of Arizona. He has also contributed to homeless censuses and surveys for several counties. James is a dedicated San Francisco Bay Area sports
fan and loves to see how statistics are increasingly used as
an integral part of sports performance evaluation. Mr.
Connery graduated from the University of Arizona with a
Bachelor of Arts in history. He earned his MBA from
California State University, Monterey Bay.
Donna R. Maurillo is communications director for
Applied Survey Research. She has a lifelong career in
public relations and corporate messaging, primarily for
health care, technology, public policy, and higher education. Most recently, she consulted to Cisco Systems, and
she was director of Technology Transfer for the Mineta
Transportation Institute, a research organization affiliated
with San Jose State University (SJSU). She has managed
projects with state and federal agencies, the Chinese and
South Korean governments, and Cabinet-level offices.
She earned her BA in liberal arts with honors from the
University of California, Santa Cruz, and her MSc in
transportation management from SJSU.
