8.6.10A rea 10. Exposure to Mild Solvents
This is intended for locations subject to intermittent contactw ith aliphatic
hydrocarbons sucha sm inerals pirits, lower alcohols, glycols, etc. Such
contactcan be the result of splash,s pillage, or fumes.
Cross-linked materials, such as epoxies, are best for this service because
solventswill dissolve single package coatings. Asingle coat of inorganic zinc
is an excellentchoice for immersion service in solventsorfor severe splashes
and spills.
The gloss of ac oating system is often reduced as ar esult of solvent
splashes or spills. However, this is asurface effect that usually does not affect
the overall protective properties of the coating.
Recommended systems for use in this location are A, D, andGof Table 8.4.
8.6.11A rea 11. Extreme pH Exposure
This covers locationst hat are exposed to strong solvents, extreme pHs,
oxidizing chemicals, or combinations thereof with high temperatures. The
usual choice for coating these areas are epoxy novalacs, epoxy phenolics,
and high build polyurethanes. Other special coatings suchasthe polyesters
and vinyle stersm ay also be considered. However,t hese systemsr equire
special application considerations.
Regardless of whichc oating system is selected,s urface preparation is
important. An abrasive blast,e ven on concrete, is required. In addition,
all surfacecontaminants must be removed. When coating concrete, athicker
film is required. System Fi nT able 8.5 is recommended for optimum
protection.
Recommended forthis location is system IinT able 8.4 and systems B, C,
and Fi nT able 8.5.
The foregoing have beeng eneralizationsa st ow hate nvironmental
conditions may be encountered, along with suggested coating systems to
protect the substrate. Data presented will act as aguide in helpingthe reader
to select the proper coating system. Keep in mind that the surfacep reparation is critical and should not be skimped on.
