do not permit open blast cleaning where there is ap revalence of electric
motors or hydraulice quipment. Refineries, in general, do not permito pen
blast cleaning or any othermethod of surfacepreparation that might result in
the possibility of aspark, static electricity buildup, or an explosion hazard.
If an ew facility is beingc onstructed, it is possiblet hat during erection
manyareas may become enclosed or covered or so positioned that access is
difficult or impossible. These structures must be painted prior to installation.
When all of this information has been collected, the appropriate paint
systemsmay be selected. In most instances, it will not be practicalorpossible
to select one single coating system for the entire plant. There willb ea reas
requiring systems to provide protection from aggressive chemicals, whereas,
other areas may requirec oating systems simply for esthetics. If an area is a
combination of mild and aggressive conditions, acoating system should be
selected that willb er esistant to the most aggressive condition.
Several typical industrial environmental areas have been illustrated that
coating systems may be exposed to with recommendations for paint systems
to be used in these areas. The paintsystemsare shown in Table 8.4 through
Table 8.9 with the appropriate surfacep reparation. The tables have been
arrangedb ased on surface preparation. Each coating system shown in a
particular tabler equires the same surfacep reparation.
8.6.1 Area 1. Mild Exposure
This is an area where structural steel is embedded in concrete, encased in
masonry, or protected by noncorrosive type fireproofing. In manyinstances,
no coating will be applied to the steel. However,i ti sagood idea to coat
the steel substrate with aprotective coating to protect them during construction andi nc ase they end up being either intentionally or unintentionally
exposed.
Agood practice would be to applyageneral use epoxy primer 3–5 mils dry
film thickness (dft) (75–125 m m). If the surfacec annotb ea brasive blasted,
asurface tolerant epoxy masticmay be used.
Recommended systemsa re found in Table 8.7 systems Aa nd C.
8.6.2 Area 2. TemporaryProtection; Normally DryInteriors
This area consists of office space or dry storage areas (warehouses) or other
locationse xposed to generally mild conditions or areas where oil-based
paints presently last for ten or more years. If locatedinanindustrial environment, there is the possibility of exposure to occasional fumes, splashing, or
spillage of corrosive materials. Because of this, it is suggested that an industrial grade acrylic coating system or asingle coat of epoxy be applied.
This recommendation is nots uitable fori nterior surfaces thata re
frequently cleaned or exposed to steamc leaning. Refer to area 4. Recommended for this area are systems Aa nd Ci nT able 8.7.
