to chemical attack. They have am aximum temperature resistance of
2258 F/108 8 Cd ry; 1508 F/668 Cwet.
These paints are used on exterior wood surfaces for primers requiring
penetrability and in less severe chemical environments.
8.3.3O il-Based Paints
These paints aremixtures of pigment and boiledlinseed oil or soybean oil or
othersimilar materials. This paintisused as aready-mixed paint particularly
on wood surfaces because of its penetrating power.Itisresistant to weather,
but has relatively poor chemical resistance and will be attacked by alkalies.
Temperature limitations are 2258 F/108 8 Cdry; 1508 F/668 Cwet.
8.3.4W ater Emulsion Paints
Water-based latex emulsions consist of fine particles of high molecular
weight copolymersofpolyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate, acrylic esters,
styrene–butadiene, or other resins combinedwith pigments, plasticizers, UV
stabilizers, and other ingredients. Avariety of thickeners, coalescing aids,
and other additives are present in the water phase.
The paintfi lm is formed by water evaporation. Initial adhesion may be
relatively poor as the water continues to evaporate,a nd coalescing aids,
solvents, and surfactants evaporate or are leachedf romt he “curing” film.
Finala dhesion and environmental resistant properties are reached from as
little as af ew days to afew months after application.
1. Resistance: Resistanttow eather but poor chemical resistance.
2. Temperature resistance: 1508 F/668 Cdry or wet.
3. Limitations: Not suitablef or immersion service.
4. Applications: Used in general decorative applications on wood.
8.3.5S ilicones
There are two types: hight emperature and water repellent in water or
solvent.
1. Resistance: Excellentr esistance to sunlight and weathering; poor
resistance to acids and alkalies; resistant to water.
2. Temperature resistance: In aluminum formulation, resistant to
12008 F/699 8 Cand to weathering at lower temperatures.
3. Limitations: Hightemperature type requires baking for good cure;
not chemically resistant.
4. Applications: Used on surfaces exposed to high temperatures as
water repellant; water solvent formulations used on limestone,
