6.6.11 PolyvinylideneChloride (Saran)
Saran is the trademark of Dow Chemical for their proprietary polyvinylidene chloride( PVDC)r esin.I th as am aximum allowableo perating
temperature of 1758 F/818 C. It is used to line piping as wella sv essels.
PVDCh as found wide applicationi nt he platingi ndustry and for
handling deionized water,P harmaceuticals, food processing, and other
applications where stream purity protection is critical. The material complies
with FDA regulations for food processing and potable water and also with
regulations prescribed by the Meat Inspection Division of the Department of
Agriculture for transporting fluids used in meat production. In applications
sucha sp latings olutions, chlorines, and certain other chemicals, Sarani s
superior to polypropylene and finds many applications in the handling of
municipal water supplies and waste waters. Refer to Table 6.35 for the
compatibility of PVDCw ith selected corrodents. Reference [1]p rovides a
more comprehensive listing.
