6.5.10 Nitrile Rubber(NBR, Buna-N)
Nitriler ubber is ac opolymer of butadienea nd acrylonitrile. The main
advantages of the nitriler ubbers are theirl ow cost, good oil and abrasion
resistance, and good low temperature and swellc haracteristics.
The nitrile rubbers exhibit good resistance to solvents, oil, water,a nd
hydraulic fluids. Avery slight swelling occurs in the presence of aliphatic
hydrocarbons, fattya cids,a lcohols, andg lycols.T he deteriorationo f
physical properties as aresult of this swellingissmall, making NBR suitable
for gas and oil resistant applications.
The use of highly polar solventssuch as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone,
chlorinated hydrocarbons, ethers and esters should be avoided because
these materialsw illa ttack the nitriler ubbers.T able 6.15 showst he
compatibility of the nitrile rubbers with selected corrodents.
Nitrile rubbers are unaffected by cold weather or rapidt emperature
change andprovide excellentresistance to aliphatic hydrocarbons. They also
have good abrasion resistance. However,t his material is more costly than
natural rubber and is more difficult to apply.B una-N is used to line tanks
and piping.
6.5.11 Fluoroelastomers
Fluoroelastomers (FKM) are fluorinecontaining hydrocarbon polymerswith
asaturated structure obtained by polymerizingfluorinated monomers such
