Overall, PE elastomers are resistant to the same class of chemicals and
fluids that the polyurethanes are and can be satisfactorily used at higher
temperatures in the same fluids.
Polyester elastomers have excellent resistance to nonpolar materials such
as oilsa nd hydraulic fluids, even at elevated temperatures. At room
temperature, PE elastomers are resistantt om ostp olar fluids suchasa cids,
bases, amines, and glycols. Resistance is very poor at temperatures of
1588 F/708 Corabove. These rubbers should not be in applications requiring
continuous exposure to polar fluids at elevated temperatures.
The compatibility of PE elastomers with selected corrodents is shown in
Table 6.12.P Ee lastomer are used to line tanks, ponds, swimming pools,
and drums.
6.5.8 Chlorobutyl Rubber
Chlorobutyl rubber(CIIR) is chlorinated isobutylene–isoprene.CIIR exhibits
the same general corrosion resistance as natural rubber but can be used at
higher temperatures. Unlike butyl rubber, CIIRc annotb eu sedw ith
hydrochloric acid. Refer to Table 6.13 for the compatibility of chlorobutyl
rubberwith selected corrodents and Reference [1]f or additional listings.
Chlorobutyl rubberhas the following advantages:
Heat resistance to 2008 F/938 C
Unaffected by cold weather or rapidt emperature changes
Good chemical and permeation resistance
Good resistance to ozone, sunlight, and weathering
Easier to apply than butyl rubber
