Figure 4.4 explains the criteria for the classification of each type. The features of
four types are as follows:
The urban village type and the rural type comprises the irregular block shape.
Since this feature usually appears in the area that was developed incrementally
without an overall plan, most of the urban village and rural classification types can
be considered to correspond to kampung, which is the common urban residential
area in Indonesia and generally recognized as an informal, unplanned settlement that
is formed spontaneously (Jellinek 1991; Funo 1991; Sawa 1999; Colombijn 2011).
Therefore, the urban village type can be considered as urbanized kampung (including slums), and the rural village type can be considered as rural kampung. It should
also be noted that kampung is not determined by physical factors alone. On the other
hand, the regular form type comprises the regular block shape and building layout;
hence most of them can be considered to correspond to the residential areas
developed by real estate companies or public authorities. The high-rise type comprises middle- to high-rise buildings and can be considered as condominiums or
apartments.
