To all the members of the Springer editorial team who have been most patient
and supportive as life and work prolonged delivery of a final manuscript.
To all the design students in my classes over the years who asked honest and
earnest questions to learn and practice how to back up their sustainable design
claims. And to the skeptical ones who needed to dig deeper to know how we know
what we know about our individual and collective impact on this living world. I
especially want to thank Erin Heidelberger who followed farther than any Hillier
design student and tenaciously persisted in an entire year of rich and challenging
dialogue. She appeared at the perfect time in her own soft-spoken but determined
way to make meaningful contributions to this book  through revisiting a major
design  studio project, her  illustrations, and  detailed research on how designers
and design students can actually use LCA. She is well on her way to help design
make a measurable difference.
