with curtailing personal liberty or even recognizing limits of resources. They are,
rather, required to define a system under study and, as such, should be seen as part
of an objective system to monitor and document the flow of resources. This assessment system can also be integrated as part of a workflow in design professions ethically bound to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
The impacts of how we live and what it takes to support our standard of living
can now be quantified. As individual behaviors and societal norms continue to
evolve over the next two generations, we will benefit from new technologies that
will tally their environmental effects on the fly. Our assessment tools can already
semiautomatically keep score and evaluate the risks from subtle to major shifts in
how we consume energy and material resources as we pursue happiness in all
its forms.
