Contemporary Churches
of Czestochowa—Architectural
and Urbanistic Aspects
A. Repelewicz
Abstract Sacral architecture is a significant urban element in every city. For
centuries church buildings have been one of the most important public facilities. In
Czestochowa too, they have had a huge impact on the arrangement of public spaces.
The most important religious building in Czestochowa is Jasna Góra monastery.
The oldest parish church, St. Sigismund’s, is located exactly opposite the monastery
along the central axis of the city. For several centuries, Czestochowa had only one
parish, covering the city and the surrounding area. Only two churches were erected
in the town before the nineteenth century. Further Catholic sacral buildings were
built in the nineteenth century, when Czestochowa was intensively developing. After
World War II, there was a stagnation in the field of religious architecture and by
1989 only a few further churches had been built. After 1989, there were no longer
obstacles to applying for building permits for sacral buildings. Since that time, 17
new church buildings have been erected and finished in Czestochowa. This paper
will present the issue of the spatial location of churches in the city’s districts. The
size and architectural style of these objects will also be discussed.
