2.11 Good Practices from Other Countries
Ongoing environmental pollution and climate change are a global threat. Several
countries have formulated new practices to reduce the environmental pollution and
control the climate change. Some good practices and innovative strategies that are
adopted by other countries are:
(a) Curtibia, a southern Brazilian city, has popularized bus transport within the city
and approximately 70% of the city inhabitants uses public transport (News
published in The Guardian, 17th May, 2016).
(b) To reduce pollution from vehicles, public transport is free in Paris during major
pollution events to encourage people to use public transport. Paris also promotes car and bike-sharing programmes, banning cars in many historic central
districts at weekends and imposing odd-even bans on vehicles.
(c) Application of a comprehensive and progressively effective ‘air quality management system’ for more than 20 years has helped Beijing to reduce its air
pollution (UNEP 2019).
(d) The Israel model of water management is one of the excellent and famous models which can help the thirsty world. According to Seth Siegel, in his book ‘Let
There Be Water’, the key logic of water management is reuse of waste water and
sewage water through treatment (HAARTEZ 2017).
(e) USA has installed an eco-friendly robotic machine which runs on green energy
(solar and river-current) in the River Baltimore. The robot cleans river through
removal of debris and waste and deposits the same in a dumpster barrage
(Kanti 2018).
(f) Germany, Austria, South Korea and Wales have managed to recycle 52 to 56%
of their municipal waste (World Economic Forum 2017).
(g) Republic of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, has developed its
own ‘tide-and-storm-surge early warning system’ to improve their preparedness against events like cyclones (Global Climate Action 2018).
(h) Victoria, located in Canada, has been converted to a ‘model of sustainable urban
living site’ from a brown field site through green building development initiatives, wastewater management, storm water management, sewage management,
roof-top gardening, etc. (Global Action Climate 2018).
There are more than thousands of initiatives and practices adopted by various countries to mitigate environment pollution and limit the effect of climate change. Only
few practices are stated above. India can also adopt those strategies with required
and necessary modifications to mitigate environment pollution and limit the effect
of climate change.
