18.2 Objectives
The basic objectives of the study are:
• To get an idea about E-disposal behaviour of users and consequent nature of
E-waste generated
• To locate and assess the E-waste hotspots in Kolkata Municipal Corporation
Area as a prototype of the Global South
• To spot various stakeholders in the E-waste value chain and understand their
concerns and perceptions
• To highlight eco-friendly recycling and disposal options for E-waste
18.3 Methodology and Study Area
For conducting the present study detailed review of existing literature, stock-taking
of available data was done along with analysis of present legal framework. The
study is descriptive in nature, and exploratory survey was conducted in the selected
areas of Kolkata Municipal Corporation, West Bengal, India, i.e. the E-waste
hotspots, where in-depth interaction with the stakeholders like retailers (10 concerns), consumers (120 households) and recyclers (28 establishments) was done
applying snowball sampling method to bring out the ground reality and perceptions
about the environmental and health impacts through observation and analysis.
18.4 Literature Review
Ghosh and Mahesh (2007) in the report ‘E-waste Flooding the City of Joy’ under
Toxic Link and Centre for Quality Management System, Jadavpur University, presented a detailed study of the E-waste management scenario of the Kolkata city in
the then period. It was one of the first detailed studies conducted on Kolkata and its
suburbs which clearly indicated that the area was becoming the main hub of E-waste
recycling for eastern India. A report by Indian Market Research Bureau International
(IMRB) entitled ‘Kolkata E-waste Assessment in Kolkata Metropolitan Area:
Report to West Bengal Pollution Control Board’ (2010) apart from stating the global
and national situation of the E-waste quantum delves deep into the E-waste generation and handling conditions prevalent in KMA. It highlighted the importance of
unorganized sector through the widespread network of scrap collectors offering
competitive prices. Through the article ‘E-waste: Environmental Problems and
Current Management’, Gaidajis et al. (2010) depicted the environmental problems
