that intact settlements and ancient landscapes are preserved
beneath Lake Huron.
Prior to European settlement, Iroquoian and Algonquian
peoples lived around the Great Lakes, along with many other
tribes. Europeans settled in GLCZ, beginning in the early
17th century. Figure 14.13 shows a 13-km portion of the
former Talbot Trail from Duart to Morpeth, Ontario, along
the north shore of Lake Erie. The Talbot Trail extended
nearly 260 km (155 mi) between Windsor and Fort Erie,
Ontario. It was constructed in the 1820s, and parts of it
became Highway 3.
