In 1987 GLWQA identified 43 areas of concern (AOCs)
around the Great Lakes, 26 of which were in the USA, 12
were in Canada, and 5 were binational. Since then four of the
US sites have been cleaned up and delisted. Recent budgetary constraints and relaxation of environmental controls
threaten the Great Lakes as never before.
13.3 Conclusions
The protection of soils in the GLCZ is an important part of
Great Lakes Restoration Initiative by implementing conservation practices that benefit water quality, protect watersheds
