5.1 Introduction
According to Aboriginal belief, all life as it is today is part of one vast unchanging network of relationships,
which can be traced back to the Great Ancestors of the Dreamtime (Veronica Brodie, Kaurna Elder, 1994, p. 4).
The accumulated Australian Aboriginal knowledge on the environment and Indigenous systems is
over 50,000 to 60,000  years old (Powell & Tournier, 2019; Nunn & Reid, 2016; Roberts, 1994).
During these ancient times hunter-gatherers initiated a consciousness of community (Fig. 5.1). Cycles
and centres defined space and time and this period saw the beginning of conscious design and the
building of shelters and villages. The people of the land built their own environments through an

Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 dated 28 August 2019.
