a pedagogical synthesis can be reflected, based on the following sustainability
principles:
• Cultural sustainability: seeks local solutions through existing cultural resources. It
considers the cultural identity and the local way of life, as well as the participation
of the population in decision-making processes and the formulation of tourism
development plans.
• Ecological sustainability: based on the theory that tourism development must limit
the consumption of natural resources and reduce damage to life support systems.
• Economic sustainability: enables economic growth for current generations, as
well as the preservation of natural resources that have the role of meeting the
needs of future generations.
• Spatial sustainability: it is based on the most balanced geographical distribution
of tourist demand in order to avoid exceeding the load capacity.
• Political sustainability: it is based on the negotiation of interests on fundamental
issues ranging from the local to the global scope.
• Social sustainability: it is based on a development process that aims at a stable
growth pattern, reducing social differences.
2.2 The Importance and Need for Tourism Awareness
Programs
Sustainable Tourism provides for the involvement, participation and mobilization of
the resident population in the tourism development process. This approach is only
possible if the local society is aware of the basic concepts of tourism sustainability. It
is also necessary that they can understand the different aspects involved in the process
of developing sustainability. The lack of tourist awareness in the local community
can cause problems, such as:
• Disinterest of the local community in the participatory process of local tourism
development.
• Derogatory view in relation to tourism and an attitude of resistance to development, calling into question the image of the tourist destination.
• Local frustration and loss of credibility in tourism development.
• Lack of preparation for direct or indirect action in tourism, reflected in the quality
of services provided to tourists.
These situations are complicated to reverse, requiring a greater effort than just the
elaboration and application of tourist awareness programs for the local community.
Thus, it becomes a fundamental step in the tourism planning and organization process.
It allows the community itself to choose the type of tourism desirable, contributing
positively to the development of local society and tourism activity.
